Actor Matthew McConaughey admits he’s become selfish now that he is married with children. His relatively new responsibilities have caused him to reassess each career move carefully before taking on new films.
The ‘Magic Mike’ star covers the new issue of ‘Details‘ magazine, and talks about just how much he has changed over the past few years.
His surfer dude persona is gone, having been replaced by a more thoughtful and admittedly “selfish” family man vibe. MM took a self-imposed hiatus several years ago from film work and now weighs each new opportunity while considering the impact it will have on his model wife Camila Alves and their three children, Levi, Livingston and Vida.
He explains, “I just said, ‘I’m going to take some time off. I have to take care of my family right now. We’ve got the means in the bank account, we’ve got a roof over our head, we’re gonna eat well, we’re fine. So let’s take some introspective time.’ It wasn’t a mini-retirement. It was just that I wanted to listen to myself and be a bit more discerning.”
McConaughey admits, “I’m choosing to be more selfish. I remember feeling not sure about what I wanted to do and was feeling — I’m not sure despondent is the right word, but a feeling like things were plateauing. I wanted to close the gap between who I am and the life I’m living and my work life. So I think I got really selfish. You start a family and you get selfish.”
While he struggled to take advantage of some new projects, he credits his wife with giving him a strong nudge. He recalls, “I’ve got a wife who challenges me. There were two movies I wanted to do last year, but they were back-to-back with no separation. She was like, ‘You want to do it–buck up, grab your nuts, and make it happen. We’ll be there with you.’”
