Ellen DeGeneres Show Sued for Music Copyright Infringement

The Ellen DeGeneres Show is being sued for copyright infringement by numerous record companies for using more than 1000 songs without permission during the wildly popular dance segment of the show.

The lawsuit, which was filed in U.S. District Court in Nashville on Wednesday (the same day Ellen was named the fourth judge on American Idol), claims the producers of the show are violating the Copyright Act by using pre-1972 recordings without a license, and by playing some of the most popular songs of the day, which record labels don’t license for daytime television at any price.

Representatives of the recording companies asked defendants why they hadn’t obtained a license to use the songs, and were told they didn’t “roll that way,” according to the lawsuit.

The suit states, “As sophisticated consumers of music, Defendants knew full well that, regardless of the way they rolled, under the Copyright Act, and under state law for the pre-1972 recordings, they needed a license to use the sound recordings lawfully.”

A statement issued by show spokesman, Scott Rowe, says the issue does not involve Ellen, and the company has been working with the record labels for months to resolve things on “amicable and reasonable terms.”

Plaintiffs include Arista Music, Atlantic Recording Corp., Capitol Records, Motown Record Company, Sony Music Entertainment, Virgin Records America and Warner Bros. Records.

Ellen DeGeneres will be Paula Abdul’s replacement on American Idol, Fox announced on Wednesday.

Ellen will join Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi as the fourth judge for season nine of Idol, which begins in January.

At a taping of The Ellen DeGeneres Show scheduled to air on Thursday, DeGeneres told the audience she will continue with her Emmy-winning show, but would have “a day job and a night job.”

“The times we’re living in,” she quipped, “we’re all doing that.”

“I have not missed one episode,” DeGeneres says of American Idol.

“Hopefully, I’m the people’s point of view because I’m just like you,” she said on her show. “I sit at home and I watch it, and I don’t have that technical … I’m not looking at it in a critical way from the producer’s mind. I’m looking at it as a person who is going to buy the music and is going to relate to that person.”

Paula Abdul abrubtly left American Idol in August, announcing her decision on Twitter.

Idol creator and executive producer Simon Fuller says, “Ellen has been a fan of the show for many years, and her love of music and understanding of the American public will bring a unique human touch to our judging panel.

Ellen DeGeneres and her partner Portia de Rossi dined at Madeo in Los Angeles on Friday night. They live in Beverly Hills and exchanged wedding vows in August 2008 before a small group of friends and family.

De Rossi appears on the FOX sitcom Arrested Development. Ellen hosts the Emmy award winning syndicated talk show The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

Ellen Finally Snares George Clooney (Video, Photo)

Ellen DeGeneres has been on a long quest to get George Clooney to appear on her morning talk show. She dubbed her efforts last season George Watch ‘08 and has kicked it into high gear in January, proclaiming George Clooney is Mine in ‘09.

The comedic show host has questioned Clooney’s fellow actors and friends in an effort to find out what will finally entice her favorite male actor to appear as a guest on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Check out some of her earlier antics here.

A breakthrough was finally reached when ER actor Noah Wyle tipped her off that Clooney is a huge Cincinnati Reds fan, having grown up in that city. DeGeneres immediately got the producers on the task of inviting two 1970’s Big Red Machine Hall of Fame players, Johnny Bench and Joe Morgan to appear on the show.

The rest, as they say, is history. When Clooney found out that they were going to appear on Ellen, he agreed to be part of the segment that was taped on Thursday and aired today, Monday, January 19.

Brad Pitt was a guest on The Ellen Degeneres Show recently and they discussed the fact that George Clooney has never been on Ellen’s show. She asked for Pitt’s advice on how to entice Clooney to make an appearance.

Ellen related to Brad that she has tried sending over Victoria’s Secret models, Miss America and Kate Hudson but none of her efforts seem to have made an impression on Clooney.

It turns out that the Chippendales are really the way to win George’s heart. According to Pitt, a blonde Chippendale should absolutely cinch the deal.

Talk show host Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi were married last night in front of 19 guests at an intimate ceremony at their home in Beverly Hills. Their rep confirmed this information to People magazine.

Ellen, 50, and Portia, 35, started dating back in December of 2004. When the Supreme Court overturned the ban on gay marriage, citing that it was unconstitutional, Ellen told her talk show audience of her plans to wed.

In a past interview, Ellen had this to say about Portia:

“She’s taught me lessons about myself, and I feel like I have taught her. We have both changed and grown, and we just feel like, ‘Oh, Okay, this is completion.’”

Both women wore Zac Posen and exchanged Neil Lane rings. The arrangements were provided by LA florist Mark’s Garden.

On Saturday night, August 16, 2008, Ellen DeGeneres and fiancee Portia de Rossi will wed in a small, intimate ceremony with a few close family and friends.

“Their wedding is definitely happening,” and Saturday is the big night according to Page Six: “Twenty people were invited,” said a source, who noted, “Portia is wearing a flowing, form-fitting dress by Zac Posen.”

Us magazine broke the story on Thursday, saying the couple will wed this weekend in California.

Of the preparations, Ellen joked, “Planning a wedding is very stressful. It’s crazy. My gardener is now invited.”

Ellen, 50, and Portia, 35, have been dating since December 2004 and announced their plan to wed on a taped episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show in May, which aired the same day California’s Supreme Court struck down a California law banning gay marriage.
