Heath Ledger’s Final Performance Critiqued (Video)

During the Cannes Film Festival last week, the late Heath Ledger’s final performance in the film The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus was given a not so warm review.

The opening scene in the movie shows the actor hanging from the London Bridge by a rope around his neck. The film was written by Terry Gilliam and is being described as slim, incomprehensible, and desperately unconvincing by Britian’s TimesOnline critic James Christopher.

Critics weren’t thrilled with the film; one added that this will clearly be a “fan film”. While most were kind to Ledger, they were but unimpressed with Gilliam.

Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Collin Farrell stepped in to fill Ledger’s shoes after he tragically lost his life due to an overdose of prescription medication in January 2008.

Matilda Rose Ledger, three-and-a-half year old daughter of actress Michelle Williams and the late Heath Ledger, was photographed walking jauntily in New York City on Monday morning.

The youngster and her mother were in the company of other family members, including her maternal grandmother Carla Williams.

Michelle and Heath ended their three year relationship in September 2007 and he died of an accidental prescription drug overdose in Manhattan in January 2008. Williams has moved on and is now in a relationship with director Spike Jonze.

No matter who you are it is always hard when you lose someone very close to you in a tragedy, but then if you are famous the world gets to watch you grieve. That is exactly what has sent Michelle Williams over the edge since the death of her ex-boyfriend Heath Ledger last January.

This is the first time that Michelle has openly talked about what effect Heath’s death has had on her and their daughter Matilda Rose. We have some excerpts from her candid interview with Newsweek magazine where the actress talks about her hatred toward the paparazzi.

“It burns a fire inside of me, the shit that I’ve seen people do to get at me or my daughter. I won’t forget it, and I won’t support it. I don’t want my daughter growing up feeling spied on or threatened.”

Williams is unsure of the future for her and her daughter. Not only is she considering a move out of New York City but is thinking of ending her acting career as well.

“If it gets to the point where I can’t situate my life in a way that they stay away more, then I’ll drop a match on the thing. I’ll be sad. I like acting. It’s saved my life over and over again. It’s given me a sense of self-esteem, self worth. I have this thing that I am in love with…and now it has this baggage.”

Mary-Kate Olsen Plays Hardball with Federal Investigators

Mary-Kate Olsen is a wanted woman. Federal investigators want to talk to her about two powerful painkillers that contributed to the death of actor Heath Ledger. Olsen isn’t willing to sit down to discuss the matter without being guaranteed immunity from possible prosecution, according to law enforcement officials.

Olsen’s lawyer, Michael C. Miller has twice denied investigators an opportunity to question his client. He said:

“We have provided the government with relevant information including facts in the chronology of events surrounding Mr. Ledger’s death and the fact that Ms. Olsen does not know the source of the drugs Mr. Ledger consumed.”

Olsen wants a promise of immunity from prosecution before speaking to the Drug Enforcement Administration. Olsen was a close friend of the actor and was the first person called when the 28 year old was discovered by a masseuse in his TriBeca apartment in Manhattan on January 22, 2008.

Investigators could serve Olsen with a subpoena to force an appearance in front of a grand jury. All other potential witnesses have voluntarily provided answers to investigators questions. Those interviewed included anyone who was in Ledger’s apartment in the weeks prior to his death.

Several drugs were prescribed legally by doctors in Texas and California but investigators are particularly interested in how Ledger got OxyContin and Vicodin, which the medical examiner believes were the drugs that were most concentrated in his system and ultimately claimed his life.

A masseuse found the Australian actors body when she showed up for a massage appointment. She soon realized something was wrong and spent nine minutes making three calls to Olsen, who was in California, before calling 911. Olsen sent her security team to Ledger’s apartment though it is unclear what, if anything, they did upon arriving. The masseuse phoned Olsen a fourth time after paramedics arrived on the scene.

Olsen has remained mute on the subject. The fact that she is asking for immunity would seem to indicate she has information that might incriminate her in some way. We’ll be watching this story closely.

Heath Ledger’s last completed film, The Dark Knight, was released to movie theaters on July 14, 2008. The actor died unexpectedly six months ago of an accidental prescription drug overdose. The 28 year old is expected to be nominated for an Oscar for his role as The Joker.

Ledger is among esteemed company in releasing his last body of work posthumously. Other movie icons whose films hit the box office following their untimely deaths include:

James Dean died in a car crash at age 24 in 1955. His last movie Giant was released in 1956. He received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor.

Clark Gable died unexpectedly of a heart attack in late 1960, just three months before his last film project hit movie theaters. The Misfits released on what would have been Gable’s 60th birthday.

Bruce Lee, martial arts legend, died at age 32 from brain swelling in 1973. A month later his most famous movie Enter the Dragon hit cinema screens. Six years later Game of Death was released.

Natalie Wood drowned at age 43 in late 1981. The legendary actress, married to actor Robert Wagner, was midway through shooting the film Brainstorm at the time of her death. A body double was used to complete the project, which hit the big screen two years later.

Brandon Lee, son of the late Bruce Lee, was shot dead on the set of The Crow in 1993. A prop gun malfunctioned, killing the 28 year old. The film was completed and released the following year.

John Candy, heavyweight funnyman, died of a heart attack at age 43 in 1994. Two films in which he starred – Wagons East! and Canadian Bacon released the following year.

Anne Nicole Smith, former model, died at age 39 of an accidental drug overdose of prescription drugs in 2007. Illegal Aliens, in which she played Lucy, was released three months later.

Heath Ledger was midway through filming The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus at the time of his death. The cast includes Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell and Jude Law. They are reportedly helping to flesh out the remaining scenes that Ledger did not complete. The release is planned for 2009.

Heath Ledger appears as The Joker on a giant billboard advertising The Dark Knight on Houston Street. The ad was placed just two blocks from the Tribeca apartment building in Manhattan, where the actor died of an accidental overdose of prescription medication in January 2008.

The billboard advertisement heralds the release of the long awaited Batman flick that will open in theaters on July 18th. Ledgers fellow actors are vocal about their co-stars chances of being nominated for an Oscar. Christian Bale said:

“I do think that Heath has created an iconic villain that will stand for the ages, and of course, I would love to see him get an award. But you know, to me, you can witness his talent, celebrate his talent with this movie. Anything else is gravy. Heath has done a phenomenal enough job that I would not be surprised if he won.”

Seven actors have receive posthumous Oscar nominations, and only Australian actor Peter Finch won posthumously for his performance in the 1976 movie Network. He died of a heart attack prior to the awards show.

Heath Ledger as the Joker in The Dark Knight

James Van Praagh, co-executive producer of the television show Ghost Whisperer and a well-known psychic medium, claims that Michelle Williams has been woken up twice by Heath Ledger’s ghost, and says he himself has also been visited by Ledger’s ghost.

In a recent interview, Van Praag says:

Yes Heath Ledger has appeared to me. Two weeks after he died I was shaving and right behind on the right side in the mirror his face appeared and he said to me in my head that I screwed up. Now he knew me. We didn’t know each other directly, but we had mutual friends and he knew what I did. He said I screwed up. Then he thought about his daughter and that was it. Then the next thing I heard about Michelle [Williams], his ex, at their apartment in Brooklyn she’s been haunted by him twice. Once she was awakened at 3:00 AM by furniture moving and another time at 4:00 AM in the morning. She said she knew it was him. There was a shadowy figure at the end of her bed. She knows it’s him. I do get a sense that he is restless right now and really wants to speak with her. Actually as I speak I am working on doing a reading for her.”

Van Praagh says he sees a violent end for O.J. Simpson, and an early end for Amy Winehouse (although he admits you don’t have to be a psychic to figure that out). He also claims Britney Spears has two ghosts of her very own following her around.
