Matt Lauer Bicycle Accident

NBC Today Show host Matt Lauer was a no-show this morning after getting into a bicycle accident over the weekend. The unfortunate collision involved Matt and a deer.

It is not clear if Matt actually hit the deer or if he swerved to miss colliding with it but in any case, he flipped over his handlebars and suffered a separated shoulder. He is scheduled to undergo surgery, according to ET.

Co-host Meredith Viera had a little fun at Matt’s expense this morning, telling viewers that she “thinks the deer was hired by the competition” and then went on to say that actually she hired the ‘hit’ but reports that she gave the deer strict orders to just graze him.

We first reported that Lauer was on a motorcycle – which really did seem out of character for the TV host. Upon further investigation we discovered that he was on a bicycle.

What do you think? Is is appropriate for Meredith to joke at Matt’s expense? Lauer is expected to return to the show by the end of the week.

“I came across arrogant” Cruise says of his 2005 appearance on the show. “I could have handled that better.”

Crusie sat down with Lauer to discuss his family, his marriage to Katie Holmes, and his new film “Valkyrie.”

Matt Lauer Marriage Question by Meredith Vieira

It started like any other Monday morning on The Today Show. Meredith Vieira and Matt Lauer started an innocent enough story intro about the right age to get married. Matt asked the question and Meredith responded that she had tied the knot when she was in her 30’s. Without missing a beat she turned the question on her co-host and asked, “When did you get married?”

Matt was left stammering and not willing or able to bluff his way through. His first marriage to television producer Nancy Alspaugh spanned 1982-1989. That would have made Lauer 25 when he first married. Matt went on to marry his current wife Annette Roque in 1998. That union has gone through a very rocky patch with divorce proceedings initiated. The couple have since reconciled and are raising three young children, Jack, Romy and Thijs.

Back to Meredith. After she left Lauer speechless she couldn’t leave it alone. Someone off camera was heard to say, “Nice!” She said, “Anyway, I’m sorry. Oh geez…” Her parting comment before break was, “I don’t think I’m going to be the one to live happily ever after, after this show!”

As one of our readers pointed out, Matt brought up the subject so he really brought on the reflex question by his co-host. Meredith simply prolonged his momentary discomfort by carrying on – as she has been known to do on numerous occasions.

Tom Cruise was a surprise guest at a Friar’s Club roast of Matt Lauer on Friday at New York’s Hilton Hotel.

Colleagues roasted Lauer for being a germaphobe and for having a clothes budget to rival Sarah Palin’s.

NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams joked, “I always say, a lot of the outfits you see him wear on the ‘Today’ show, they also make for men.”

Cruise said Lauer was “the man we wake up to every morning — only because we had the channel on NBC before we fell asleep.”

Cruise had a heated on-air exchange with Lauer three years ago with the Today show co-host, berating him for suggesting that psychiatric drugs might help some people.

Cruise also joked about the infamous couch jumping episode on Oprah Winfrey’s show, saying Lauer advised him before the interview with Winfrey to “go crazy. Trust me. Trust me. People will love you for it.”

Lauer’s former co-host Katie Couric suggested Cruise was threatened by Lauer because “he wants to be the only heterosexual man in the room who everyone thinks is gay.”

Cruise left just after his speech, leading Lauer to call after him. “Tom, can you stay?” Lauer asked. “I’ll get a booster seat.”
