Olivia Culpo, the reining Miss USA, was crowned 2012 Miss Universe Wednesday at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas.

The 20-year-old represented Rhode Island when she took the crown in June and bested 88 contestants last night to win the ultimate pageant title.  It was the first time in 15 years that an American won the international beauty competition.

Culpo hit Twitter to thank her followers, “What an honor!  This night was a dream come true.  Thank you everyone for your support tonight!!! USA finally did it.”

The Miss USA and Miss Universe organization is owned jointly by Donald Trump and NBC Universal.  The newly crowned Miss Universe posed with the real estate mogul, who puckered up for photographers … we apologize if these images cause you distress.

Her platform will be the importance of music education.  A cellist for 13 years, she has performed with the Boston Symphony and at Carnegie Hall in NYC.

We’ve included the 2012 swimsuit poses that helped to cement her various victories with judges during competitions for Miss Rhode Island, Miss USA and Miss Universe.  Check out the leggy evening gown poses here:

Miss Universe Canada beauty queen Jenna Talackova will be allowed to compete in the 2012 Miss Universe Canada competition on May 19 in Toronto.

The transgender 23-year-old was disqualified last week when the Miss Universe Organization discovered that the contestant from Vancouver was not a “naturally born female.”

Talackova has identified as a female since the age of 4 and began hormone therapy at age 14.  She underwent gender reassignment surgery at 19.

The aspiring model turned to high-profile legal eagle Gloria Allred amid the firestorm of controversy and that move apparently paid off.

Donald Trump and his pageant organization have reversed their initial decision: “We will allow Jenna Talackova to compete in the 2012 Miss Universe Canada pageant provided she meets the legal gender recognition requirements of Canada, and the standards established by other international competitions.”

A GLAAD spokesman responded, “The Miss Universe Organization made the right decision and has taken an important first step.  Now GLAAD urges the Organization to include all women and use this incident to speak out in support of the transgender community.”

“So many women today do not have equal opportunities for employment, housing and safety simply because they are transgender.  The Miss Universe Organization should look to state non-discrimination laws and institutions including the Olympics, NCAA and The CW’s America’s Next Top Model, which do not discriminate against transgender women.”

Leila Lopes was crowned Miss Universe 2011 in Sao Paulo, Brazil on September 12, the first woman from Angola to win the high profile pageant.

The statuesque 25-year-old beat out 88 contestants last night and will now head to New York City, where she will live for the next year while executing the duties of her new position.  Leila will share a luxury penthouse apartment with the reigning Miss USA and Miss Teen USA.

When asked by a pageant judge what she would change about her physical appearance, Leila responded, “Thank God I’m very satisfied with the way God created me and I wouldn’t change a thing.  I consider myself a woman endowed with inner beauty.”

The newly-crowned Miss Universe will champion HIV advocacy worldwide.

Heidi Montag Miss Universe

Are you thinking what we’re thinking?  Miss Universe 2009 couldn’t find anyone better than Heidi Montag to perform for the worldwide LIVE broadcast?  Decked out in sequined pants and matching bra, the blonde belted out her rendition of Body Language.

The performance was Heidi’s first LIVE televised gig and we can’t help but wonder what Donald Trump was thinking.  Thankfully, half of her performance was not visible to viewers, who were shown the Miss Universe contestants instead, hearing only the music.

Montag gave this quote before hitting the stage, “I think people don’t know what to expect, and how can they?  It’s my first performance live and it’s in front of a half a billion eyes.  I’m very excited to show everyone what I am coming with.”

Check out her performance below and decide for yourself.  Has she established herself as a bonafide performer or simply labeled herself a fool.  Do let us know what you think.
