Olivia Culpo, the reining Miss USA, was crowned 2012 Miss Universe Wednesday at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas.

The 20-year-old represented Rhode Island when she took the crown in June and bested 88 contestants last night to win the ultimate pageant title.  It was the first time in 15 years that an American won the international beauty competition.

Culpo hit Twitter to thank her followers, “What an honor!  This night was a dream come true.  Thank you everyone for your support tonight!!! USA finally did it.”

The Miss USA and Miss Universe organization is owned jointly by Donald Trump and NBC Universal.  The newly crowned Miss Universe posed with the real estate mogul, who puckered up for photographers … we apologize if these images cause you distress.

Her platform will be the importance of music education.  A cellist for 13 years, she has performed with the Boston Symphony and at Carnegie Hall in NYC.

Olivia Culpo was crowned Miss USA last night in Las Vegas.  She will represent the United States at the Miss Universe 2012 pageant in December.

The 20-year-old beat out a field of 51 contestants in the national competition after becoming Miss Rhode Island USA 2012 on September 18, 2011.

An accomplished musician, Culpo participated in the Rhode Island Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and later in the Rhode Island All-State Orchestra as a cellist, winning a seat at Boston Symphony Hall and Carnegie Hall.

2012 Miss USA Prelim Competition: Most Rock Leg Slits PHOTOS

The 2012 Miss USA preliminary competition kicked off last night in Las Vegas when the 51 gorgeous contestants donned swimsuits and evening gowns.

We’re seeing lots of revealing leg slits, a trend made popular by the exaggerated posing by Angelina Jolie during this year’s Oscars.

Featured below are Miss Maryland, Miss West Virginia, Miss Idaho, Miss North Carolina, Miss Vermont, Miss Virginia, Miss California, Miss Alabama, Miss Texas and Miss Oregon.

The 61st Miss USA pageant will be broadcast live on NBC Sunday, June 3 at 9:00 p.m. eastern.

2012 Miss USA Swimsuit Sneak Preview PHOTOS

The 61st Miss USA pageant will be held on June 3, in Las Vegas.  The gorgeous state contestants modeled swimsuits Wednesday as part of their first Sin City media event.

The lovely ladies wore Kooey Swimwear in a fashion show held at Trump International Hotel.

Official competition will take place at the Theatre for the Performing Arts. The live NBC broadcast will be skillfully orchestrated by co-hosts Andy Cohen, Giuliana Rancic, Jeannie Mai and Kelly Osbourne.

Fifty state winners plus a representative from the District of Columbia will vie for the crown and the opportunity to compete in the 2012 Miss Universe pageant.

Donald Trump and NBC own the Miss Universe Organization which produces Miss Universe, Miss USA and Miss Teen USA.

Rima Fakih DUI Arrest: 2010 Miss USA Busted in Michigan, Lied on Twitter

Rima Fakih recently ended her reign as Miss USA and is now facing the possibility of a DUI conviction.  Police arrested the beauty queen early Saturday morning on suspicion of drunken driving in Highland Park, Michigan.

The 26-year-old Arab American attempted to fool her Twitter friends later the same day with a denial, “Let’s clear things up now.  I’m NOT in Michigan and I’m NOT in jail! Wrong Fakih.”

That tweet turned out to be a fabrication and was later removed, likely at the insistence of her lawyer, Doraid Elder, who confirmed the arrest on Sunday.

Elder indicated that Fakih has “not a single blemish” on her record up to this point and “this shouldn’t be something that defines who she is.”  He reiterated that his client is “very saddened and very apologetic for the situation that she’s in right now.”

The beauty queen gave up her crown in June, 2011, just days after the Miss Universe Organization complained that 2010 Miss USA had broken their pageant protocol by partying until 4 a.m. during the international competition.

Fakih’s response, “It’s not a big deal.  I’m not a party animal.  I took my job as Miss USA very seriously.  Sometimes, of course, I want to let it all go even though I’m a beauty queen.”

Highland Park police were tight-lipped regarding details, indicating that inquiries will be answered by the Chief of Police on Monday.
