New Bio Dishes Dirty Details of Paul Newman’s Life

Following the death of most Hollywood legends, it is only a matter of time before someone decides they are going to cash in on the secrets that the celebrity didn’t share with the public. This is how we see Shawn Levy’s new bio Paul Newman: A Life, about the actor who passed away last September, after a courageous battle with lung cancer.

The book, set to launch next month, paints a picture of Newman as a “functioning alcoholic” and womanizer. Levy writes about how Paul wore a beer opener around his neck and drank nearly a case of beer a day followed by scotch. He went on to say that no matter where the star was, he reportedly had a drink in hand.

Newman, married to Joanne Woodward for 50 years, apparently carried on affairs while married, including several of long duration.

There aren’t too many people in Tinsel Town who don’t have skeletons in their closet and we are of the opinion that if they are able to keep them under wraps and function in society without causing too many waves, let them rest in peace.

The details of the late actor Paul Newman’s last will have been released this week. The will, signed on April 11, 2008 by Newman, was filed in Connecticut. As expected, the actors wife Joanne Woodward will inherit all property and personal possessions.

He left his Oscar and other awards to Newman’s Own Foundation, as well as interest in Newman’s Own and Salad King. All profits from those business holdings are to be distributed to charity. Newman’s airplane and race cars are to be sold and the proceeds will revert back to the estate.

Newman retired from acting in May 2007 and was diagnosed with cancer in March 2008. He died at home in Westport, Connecticut, surrounded by family on September 26, 2008.

Paul Newman was survived by his wife Joanne Woodward, daughters Susan and Stephanie from his first marriage, daughters Nell, Lissy and Clea with wife Joanne, and two grandsons. He was preceded in death by his son Scott.

The Painted Turtle brought together family and friends who gathered to honor the legacy and celebrated the life of Paul Newman. He was not only a wonderful actor but an extraordinary human being who lost his battle with lung cancer last month.

Paul Newman founded the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp The Painted Turtle, a residential summer camp that serves seriously ill children. The program assists kids in gaining hope when their will to go on diminishes and provides them the ability to lead a rich, productive life.

If you were to step foot on the grounds, you would think that you were at a traditional camp site with swimming, boating, fishing, horseback riding and arts and crafts. When you dig deeper you will see that there are no activities that can not be done by each and every child no matter what their illness.

The children are well cared for and the camp provides one adult for every two campers as well as nurses who are in the children’s cabin in order to assist them with their activities. The staff is made up of a compilation of the best medical specialty professionals that California has to offer.

Last night’s event was held at Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco where celebrities came to remember, honor and enhance Paul Newman’s legacy by lending their support to one of his important programs.

Paul Newman died of cancer at age 83 on Friday, September 26, 2008. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Joanne Woodward, a successful Hollywood actress and their children Nell Potts, Lissy Newman and Clea Newman. He was married to Jackie Witte from 1949 to 1958 and they had three children: Scott Newman, who died at age 28 of a drug overdose, and daughters Susan Newman and Stephanie Newman.

Newman had a successful career in acting, directing, auto racing and as business owner of Newman’s Own, the maker of salad dressing. His daughter Nell Potts Newman is poised to take over that operation for the family.

The actor’s 60+ film career began in 1954 and continue to 2007. His directed a dozen movies from 1968-2005. Paul Newman, who has been battling lung cancer, passed away at his home in Westport, Connecticut on Friday around 8pm.

Bitten and Bound received an email last night that Newman had died, but waited for his rep to confirm before posting the news.

Reports of Newman’s illness began in March when it was learned that he had been seeing an oncologist at New York’s Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Photographs taken of Newman in May and June showed him looking gaunt.

The 83-year-old actor began getting his affairs in order in August, telling his family that he wanted to die at home.

Newman, who had a lengthy film career spanning five decades, announced his retirement from acting on May 25, 2007, stating, “You start to lose your memory, you start to lose your confidence, you start to lose your invention. So I think that’s pretty much a closed book for me.”

A noted philanthropist, Newman started Newman’s Own, a line of food products, in 1982, donating the proceeds to charity. His daughter Nell will be taking over the business.

Paul Newman has informed his family that he wants to die at home. The actor, who reportedly has weeks to live, has been getting his affairs in order and says he wants to spend his final weeks at home with wife Joanne Woodward and his daughters.

The Oscar-winning actor left Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York in a wheelchair on July 31 after completing chemotherapy.

“He didn’t want to die in the hospital,” said a close family friend. “Joanne and his daughters are beside themselves with grief.”

Reports that Newman was dying from lung cancer began in January when a source said he had been seeing an oncologist. Although his rep denied the 83-year-old actor was terminally ill, rumors gained steam when Martha Stewart posted photos of a gaunt-looking Newman on her blog.

According to a close family friend, the actor’s children are having a hard time accepting that their father may be dying and were angry when he gave a prized Ferrari to a friend.

Newman retired from acting in 2006 after a 50-year career that included Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), The Sting (1971), The Hustler (1961), Hud (1963) and Cool Hand Luke (1967).

He was nominated for ten Oscars, winning best actor for his role in The Color of Money in 1986.

Although Paul Newman’s rep has denied reports that the 83-year-old actor is terminally ill, yesterday it was reported that Newman has turned over the entire $120 million value of his ownership in Newman’s Own – the company that makes salad dressing, spaghetti sauce and cookies – to charity, which has only added fuel to rumors that the Academy Award winner is dying of lung cancer.

However; it should be noted that Newman actually set up Newman’s Own Foundation Inc., the recipient of the donations, two years ago – prior to any alleged lung cancer diagnosis – in honor of his 80th birthday to ensure his charities would continue benefiting from his generosity.

Reports of Newman’s illness started in March when PageSix reported that the Academy Award winner had been seeing an oncologist at New York’s Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center for the past seven months.

“He’s been there a lot — he’s even worked out in the waiting room, doing squat thrusts. Last time he was in there he had a long beard,” an unnamed source told PageSix.com. “Joanne Woodward is there waiting for him and being very sweet with the assistants.”

The Web site previously reported that Newman was a no-show at his Hole in the Wall Gang charity party last Monday night. According to his rep, it was because “he’s been having trouble with his back,” PageSix.com reported.

Then late last month Newman announced he would not be directing “Of Mice and Men”at the playhouse in his hometown of Westport, Conn. (*see note below), citing an unspecified illness:

“I’m very sorry I can’t be part of this Westport Country Playhouse production, but I leave Of Mice and Men in Mark Lamos’ very capable hands with the full support of my wife, Joanne Woodward, and Anne Keefe as Playhouse artistic directors.”

*Although many media outlets are reporting that Newman was to direct “Our Town,” that isn’t the case. Newman actually starred in a production of “Our Town” at Westport six years ago, which may be the cause of the confusion.

Last week rumors of his illness were intensified when Martha Stewart posted photos of a gaunt-looking Newman on her blog from a benefit she hosted for the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, an organization for which the actor sits as board of directors.

And now Fox News is reporting that a longtime friend and business partner of Newman’s has confirmed his illness:

“He’s a fighter,” one of his close friends told Fox411 Tuesday morning. “And he’s going to keep fighting.”

So does he or does he not have lung cancer? All I can say is that if he does, it is obvious that he and his family are trying to keep this a private matter. Not surprising since he and wife Joanne Woodward have lived far from the Hollywood spotlight in Westport, Conn. for the last 50 years.

I think I can speak for all of us in saying we hope the rumors are just that.
