Yvonne Craig, the actress who played the role of Batgirl in the iconic ’60s TV series, has passed away at the age of 78, her family confirms.

The TV favorite had been battling breast cancer which had spread to her liver over the past two years, according to her website:

"She had been in chemo almost continuously," her family said, "and that had weakened her immune system as well as her body."

"This didn’t dampen her sense of humor or her spirit … she intended to win this battle. In the end, her mind still wanted to fight."

Craig’s popular Batgirl character (a.k.a. mild-mannered librarian Barbara Gordon, her non-hero alter ego) hit TV screens in 1967.

She then joined the TV series Batman for its third season.

The actress did all her own stunts and motorcycle riding.

Craig famously said that her character was created to "encourage an over-40 male audience and a prepubescent female audience."

"That’s the real reason why they hired me!"

Before becoming Batgirl, Craig starred opposite Elvis Presley in the films It Happened at the World’s Fair and Kissin’ Cousins.

She also dated the iconic singer for a time.

Over the years Craig appeared on many other TV shows including The Man From U.N.C.L.E., The Six Million Dollar Man, and Kojak.

Star Trek Nation will also no doubt remember Yvonne’s role as Marta, the green Orion slave girl, who wanted to kill Captain Kirk.

Craig is survived by sister Meridel, husband Kenneth and two nephews, who request donations to The Angeles Clinic Foundation.
