What is the future of late night without Leno or Letterman?  I guess we'll find out soon enough -- David Letterman announced during Thursday night's show that he will be retiring, "sometime next year".

Letterman has been in the late show game for over three decades, starting out on NBC's Late Night, and moving to CBS for The Late Show in 1982.

David Letterman announced his plans to retire from the Late Show "sometime next year".  He made the announcement Thursday afternoon, during taping for Thursday night's show.

Letterman, 66, has been in the late night game for 32 years, starting his career with NBC in 1982.  He was the NBC's first "Late Night" host, later leaving to work with CBS in 1993.

Letterman told his audience at today's taping, “I just want to reiterate my thanks for the support from the network, all of the people who have worked here, all of the people in the theater, all the people on the staff, everybody at home, thank you very much," Letterman said. "What this means now, is that Paul and I can be married.”

letterman good through 2015

CBS has given 'Late Night' host David Letterman two thumbs up with a contract extension that will pit him against Jimmy Fallon when he takes over for Jay Leno after the Winter Olympics.

Letterman, 66, has inked a deal that will take him through 2015 despite strong suggestions that the network would bring in some new blood to compete against the 'Tonight Show' when 39-year-old Fallon slips behind the hosting desk.

Dave joked, "Les Moonves and I had a lengthy discussion, and we both agreed that I needed a little more time to fully run the show into the ground."

The CBS CEO said earlier this summer, "Outside of Johnny Carson, Letterman is the best that ever was in late night.  We like the stability.  Despite what people think, we don't like drama at 11:30 p.m."

After the contract extension news broke, Moonves said, "There is only one Dave, and we are extremely proud that he continues to call CBS 'home.'"

The 'Late Night' host recently made history by surpassing Johnny's record for years hosting and is now the reigning record holder with 31 years.

Carson retired at age 66 in 1992.  Days before he died in 2005, The New York Times published a story revealing that in the years following his retirement, Johnny occasionally sent jokes to Letterman for use in his monologue.  The former host reportedly got a kick out of hearing Letterman deliver his one-liners.

Cher is currently promoting her 26th solo album 'Closer to the Truth,' an amazing feat at the age of 67.

She chatted it up with PEOPLE during an event at Tao Downtown, just part of a whirlwind week in New York City that included a guest spot on Late Night with David Letterman.

She joked, "I kill myself!  I think I'm some freak of nature.  I'm starting to believe it myself."

The singer will embark on a 49-city Dressed to Kill tour from March 22 to July 11, 2014.  She admits that the grind of launching an album and pulling a tour act together is a really big deal.

Cher quipped, "I have been up since four f––g thirty in the morning!  I mean a girl has to get up later than that!"

The 'Goddess of Pop' became prominent in 1965 as one-half of the husband-wife act Sonny & Cher.  From there she established herself as a solo act with 'Bang Bang,' 'Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves and 'Half Breed.'

No one-trick-pony, Cher won a Best Actress Academy Award for the 1988 film 'Moonstruck.'

Dave Letterman grilled his 'Late Night' guest Lindsay Lohan about her upcoming court-ordered rehab stay during their Wednesday evening interview.

Lohan was on the show to promote her appearance in 'Scary Movie 5' but the show host had other plans.

The actress managed to get in a few digs at Dave.  When asked, "Aren't you supposed to be in rehab now?" Lohan responded, "Don't you watch anything that goes on? What are you a tabloid now?"

Lindsay acknowledged that she will enter rehab on May 2nd for a 90 day stint.   She put a positive spin on things, referring to her recent court sentence as "a blessing and not a curse."

letterman goads nbc newsman brian williams

NBC newsman Brian Williams sat down with David Letterman last night on the 'Late Show' and was immediately grilled about a number of festering network issues.

The veteran CBS host tested the waters, "I'm the soul of discretion.  A few months ago there was a problem on the TODAY show."

Williams laughed and asked, "Am I going to wake up in the shower?  Please tell me I'm going to wake up and it's going to be morning and I'm going to say 'Hey!  I'm doing Dave tonight and that was just a dream.'"

Letterman pressed on, "No, now listen."  He wove a convoluted tale of the feud between Ann Curry and Matt Lauer that resulted in a shake-up and then went on to suggest that the 'Tonight Show' rumors were leaked to get everyone to focus there and not on the TODAY show.

He ended by asking Williams, "If I'm on to something, blink twice."  To the newsman's credit ... he did not.

The media noise surrounding Lauer has increased in recent weeks.  After rumors surfaced that NBC had approached Anderson Cooper, a spokesman said, "The network has exploratory talks with talent inside and outside of the network.  But to read anything specific into that is presumptuous."

Check out the humorous exchange between Brian and Dave on video below:

Late night talk show host David Letterman is famous for his witty, dry sense of humor.  The entertainer is now admitting that he has faced some very dark periods in his life.

In a candid CBS interview with Charlie Rose, Letterman opened up about his longtime battle with debilitating bouts of depression.

The 65-year-old struggled with the prospect of relying on prescription drugs to feel better.  He told Rose he was "always skeptical" about taking medication because he thought "it would make me loopy or make me hallucinate or make me drowsy."

The 'Late Night' host told of a shingles outbreak that became a nightmare experience: "Part of the concoction of drugs they give you to fight that pain is pretty serious, and I just got tired of taking them." He stopped abruptly and experienced extreme nervous anxiety on top of his depression and was a mess.

Unable to take it anymore, he contacted his friend, Dr. Louis Aronne, to get help.  He told the physician, 'OK, OK, I'll try anything just to get rid of this depression."

Letterman revealed, "It's different than, 'Oh, I don't feel good today.' It's different than feeling sad. It's different than feeling blue. It's really, like a friend of mine says, it's the world with 20/20 vision."

Letterman wed his longtime partner Regina Lasko in a courthouse civil ceremony in 2009.  They have a 9-year-old son Harry.

He'll next appear in a candid sit down session with Oprah that will air Jan. 6 on OWN.

justin bieber and david letterman

Justin Bieber discovered while appearing Thursday on Late Show with David Letterman that the talk show host isn't a fan of tattoos.

The pop icon was sporting a new ink sentiment that he picked up as a nod to his new album 'Believe.'

David Letterman inquired, “Explain this to me, is that a new tattoo?"  Justin confirmed, “This is a new tattoo."

The show host seemed shocked, “Oh God, how many do you have?"  Justin acknowledged that he has a couple after which Dave whined, “Well, tell me that’s the last one.”

"Might be," Bieb's replied.

Letterman proceeded to grab the kid's arm right where he got his new ink and Justin hurled the nickname "grandpa" at the veteran host.

alec baldwin and david letterman drop their pants

Alec Baldwin was a guest last night on 'Late Night with David Letterman.'  He appeared to hype his new movie, the Woody Allen directed 'To Rome With Love' but the conversation quickly morphed to his altercation with a photographer.

Letterman held up a tabloid photo of Baldwin lunging at the guy with the camera and gushed, "Look how good you look."

Baldwin pointed out, "I think you can see, I'm forming the letter 'F' with my mouth, and what I'm saying is 'What F-stop are you on with the camera?'"

In addition the actor demonstrated his significant weight loss by dropping his pants.  His shirt covered up what may or may not have been a pair of briefs underneath.

Dave said, "Wow.  Not what I was expecting."  As the audience shrieked with delight, the show host added, "Now I'm thinking I should take my pants off."

rosie takes david letterman to task

David Letterman took a swipe at OWN Network talk show host Rosie O'Donnell during his Tuesday night monologue and it didn't sit well with the newly-engaged comedian.

The on-air slight was about her bride-to-be Michelle Rounds.  Letterman quipped, "The woman she is marrying, her fiancee, was driving...and her car broke down.  And guess what happened?  Rosie pulls up right behind her in her tow truck."

Rosie responded Friday night on her show, "Why Dave?  I don't remember making fun of you when you had sex with all your interns!  I didn't do that.  I didn't make fun of your rampant, throbbing heterosexuality, did I Dave?"

She wasn't done yet.  "Dave, when you had that heart surgery, you shouldn't have told the doctors to take out that whole thing.  I remember when you had one, Dave, you were nice then."

Not only do you appear to be anti-gay, you're anti-tow truck driver and that just pisses me off."

And so it goes...  Check out the video below:
